VIN Report / FAQ
What is the VIN code?
VIN stands for Vehicle Identification Number, and it is a unique 17-digit code assigned to each individual vehicle. This code is also known as Chassis Number, Frame Number. The VIN code is used to identify and track vehicles and their history, including where and when they were manufactured, what features they have, and if they have been involved in any accidents or repairs. Each section of the VIN code contains information about the vehicle's manufacturer, model, year of production, engine type, and more. The VIN is a ISO standard - ISO 3779 (content and structure) and ISO 4030 (location and attachment).
About the VIN Report
The UK VIN Report will decode the vehicle VIN to show details about the vehicle, as defined by the manufacturer. In addition, extensive information from the DVLA will be shown with sections such as the current MOT and MOT history, Car tax details, Vehicle specs and more.
Why a VIN number and not a Registration number?
The VIN or Chassis Number is a permanent identifier of a road vehicle. A reg number can change (for example to private registration, swapped or cloned) making the VIN the most accurate way to retrieve data held on a vehicle. This is why forensic services reference the VIN identifier rather than the registration number. See the sample vin report.
Can I find a registration number from a VIN number?
Yes, when searching via the VIN, we will show the Registration number (number plate) as held by the DVLA.
Where is the data derived from?
Government registries: DVLA, DVSA, NHTSA and our own vehicle data set.
